Washington dispatch reports King Kalakaua and party meeting the President, with Secretary Hill present. Other callers include Governor Jewell, Gen McVeagh, and Secretaries Lincoln Hunt and Kirkwood as a steady stream of visitors continues.
A blaze in Moscow's Merchants' Bazaar yesterday destroyed twenty warehouses and burned the entire bazaar except for a few shops. The fire raged with enormous damage as responders fought to contain it. Separately in Berlin a subterranean telegraph network linking 221 towns is now complete with 4.8 million kilometers of cables.
A Virginia dispatch notes Gen Fair aligning with Platte of Connecticut and avoiding the East. Near Oroville, Jamies Andrews was shot dead while unhooking a horse from J B Espy s buggy after a drive from town. Sproul confessed intent to kill Espy and fired two gun barrels at Andrews, then surrounded Oroville. Espy had warned Sproul of danger. Also a Spanish Town dispatch reports the Alice Back wrecked on Hovton s Rocks near New York with ten of twenty four crew drowned.
The Pennsylvania Democratic State Convention convened at noon with W A Hensel of Lancaster named temporary and then permanent chair. Delegates adopted permanent organization and a bold platform denouncing Republican policy, endorsing gold and silver currency, civil service reform, and attack on corruption in postal treasury and state government.
The platform rejects monopolies and demands strict regulation of corporations and carriers to protect public interest and enforce due process. It reaffirms loyalty to Democratic principles, mourns President Garfield, and notes a late recount for state treasurer with two ballots and a revote from 6:30 to 8:30 a m.
In Hunnewell Kansas during a severe storm Wm Jesse Combs from Monroe County Kentucky sought shelter under a shed on Hamilton’s farm near Hunnewell when struck by lightning and killed instantly. The event also killed two horses and knocked down a boar but caused no serious injuries.
Gatvzston Sept 23. A collision on the international road reported from Palestine leaves 14 freight cars wrecked. No injuries reported at this time, investigators seek cause and assess damage to the line.
Kansas City September 28 Bill Ryan was found guilty in Independence of robbing a Chicago and Alton passenger train at Glendale on October 10, 1879. He received a twenty five year sentence, the first train robber conviction in Jackson County. Witnesses faced threats but public pressure nearly led to lynching if the verdict had been not guilty. A second report from Allayrs Georgia notes a Isle of Hope ferry sank near Skidaway Island with twelve drowning. the Wisconsin Democratic State convention in Milwaukee adopted numerous resolutions.
Kansas City market report lists wheat receipts shipments and in store totals with price bids and asks for No 1 and mixed grades. Also detailed cattle hogs and sheep receipts and prices at Chicago and Kansas markets. Plus district court jury lists and a sheriff sale notice for Douglas County with land description and sale date set for October 21.
Wheat and flour show unsettled to firm demand with prices varying by grade. Oats rise while barley slips. pork and lard weaken with broad cash and future shifts. Cattle receipts at St Louis show mixed trade with choice shipping steers and butcher stock priced, Texans and natives present.
