Rim Rock Classic heats up as runners battle heat
Local cross country teams endured 80 degree heat at the Rim Rock Classic. Lawrence High and Free State posted strong showings in the gold division with top city finisher Roy Wedge placing fifth and Kyra Kilwein leading De Soto and Baldwin runners. Jefferson City won the team crown.

Free State Volleyball Goes 3 3 At Seaman Invite
Free State High School volleyball went 3-3 at Saturday's Seaman Invitational in Topeka. The Firebirds defeated Shawnee Mission North 25 14, 25 8, fell to Topeka Hayden 12 25, 18 25, beat Halton 25 18, 25 16, beat Silver Lake 25 15, 26 28, 25 15, then lost in semifinals to Seaman 26 24, 13 25, 22 25 and dropped the third place match to St Mary's 11 25, 25 19, 20 25. Free State finished 4th at the 10-team tournament and will travel to Leavenworth on Tuesday.

Kansas University sophomore Maria Martinez remained undefeated in match play to lead KU on day two at the Jayhawk Invite at First Serve Tennis Center. She paired with Erin Wilbert to beat Kansas State's Petra Chuda and Andrea Straznicka 8 6 and Air Force's Shelly Johnson and Megumi Volaht 8 0. Martinez also won two singles matches advancing to the final rounds. She defeated Straznicka 6 3 6 0.

Baker University quarterback Mack Brown threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-24 win over Benedictine College. Brown added a 13 yard rushing TD. Receiver Brad Fawcett had 111 yards on three catches with two TDs, and Richie Bryant rushed for 134 yards and one TD.
