Adlai Stevenson readied a midday speech in Indianapolis to rail against rising living costs as a major campaign issue. He then planned a nationwide TV address from Milwaukee, while Eisenhower and Nixon pressed campaigns in multiple states. Stevenson accused Republicans of bread and circuses and ballyhoo to win over a trusting public. Nixon predicted strong union support for Eisenhower citing administration benefits to labor.

An Air Force pilot crash landed a T33 trainer at Karl Steffan Memorial Airport in Norfolk after running low on fuel. Maj. M. Marks of Wentworth AFB Massachusetts reported compass failure on a flight from Forbes AFB Topeka Kansas to Wichita Kansas, ending 225 miles northwest of Topeka. He suffered a bruise on his arm.
Former Lawrence resident Captain Milburn G Apt 32 died Thursday when the X-2 rocket plane he piloted developed trouble and crashed near Edwards Air Force Base California The speed and height champion had been training for flights in the X-2 and had a noted career as a jet pilot in the Air Force Reserve Apt grew up in Buffalo and attended Kansas University before joining the military He spent World War II flying fighters and later taught at Lawrence Municipal Airport before serving at Williams AFB Phoenix and Wright Patterson AFB He had been assigned to Edwards AFB for the past two years and was known for chase plane duties in jet speed tests.
