Swiss rejects loosened naturalization rules by referendum

Swiss voters defeated two government proposals to ease citizenship rules for immigrants. About 57 percent opposed automatic citizenship for third generation children, while roughly 52 percent rejected easier naturalization for first and second generation residents. Immigrants and their descendants face a 12 year wait and do not automatically qualify. A special parliamentary session approved legal reforms to open the path to citizenship.
