Kidnapping charge filed in Jacksonville case

State officials filed a kidnapping charge against Jack McWilliams 39 for abducting Linda Jaffa wife of a Jacksonville developer and holding her to a post for four days and nights She was found alive and in good condition after a $200000 ransom demand was made The loader of the suspect is his sister in law and a friend helped in the abduction McWilliams will be moved from Baker County Jail to Jacksonville for processing

City to Act on Diseased Trees in Lawrence

Lawrence city commissioners will authorize the city clerk to issue 10 day notices to owners of diseased trees. Owners already received 30 day notices. noncompliant trees will be removed by a city contracted crew and billed to owners. The program aims to reduce elm disease and replace with maples and oaks.

Man's body found in East Lawrence home

The partially decomposed body of 62 year old Meyrl LeRoy Groninger was found in his kitchen by a neighbor around 8 a.m. today. Dr. Laurance Price said death appears natural. Groninger lived alone at 1237 Prospect and planned to retire from the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services. A small dog named Spot remained inside the house. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. survivors include a brother Clarence of Logansport and several nieces and nephews.

Iowa man held after vandalism at Ramada Inn

Des Moines resident Benjamin Breed, 21, cited for criminal destruction of private property after a witness saw him damage parking lights at the Ramada Inn on Sixth and Iowa. Police chased two suspects. one escaped while Breed was arrested on the motel third floor and released on a $75 bond to appear October 8 in Municipal Court.
