British aviators repelled a large raid near London with anti-aircraft guns around the city. A night raid caused six deaths and sixteen injuries on the outskirts while many sought shelter in parks and open spaces. Officials say the first raiders were forced back and the second group driven off with bombs falling in southeast England but no further casualties reported.
Freddie Olson and Teddy Stimpson left Lawrence to ride freight trains across Kansas and Missouri after announcing plans to see a picture show. Olson telephoned his mother from Kansas City then returned home, while Stimpson did not accompany him. The youths had traveled through Olathe and Joplin, Missouri, ending up in Cape Girardeau where they found work for a dollar a day and board.
Postmaster urges students to report current addresses to ensure prompt mail delivery. Postal workers note deliveries suffer when students fail to update their addresses and changes should be reported immediately to relieve office workload.
Old settlers of Baldwin will gather in the Methodist Episcopal church for their annual meeting on October 2. A basket dinner is planned at 12 30, and all residents of the community are urged to attend. Rev Neil Moffman M A B D is appointed pastor of the True Brethren church in Lawrence. He will deliver his first sermon Sunday. Huffman brings thirteen years of missionary work in Puerto Rico and has translated texts into Spanish for natives. The church regards him highly and anticipates notable leadership.
Rev. Huffman and his wife, natives of War, educated at Lane University and Bonebrake Seminary, have served thirteen years as missionaries in Porto Rico with eight years as superintendent. They translated the United Brethren Discipline into Spanish and have years of work with Spanish-Americans in New Mexico and Texas. The couple, with three children, reside at 1785 Vermont Street and join Lawrence’s church ministry as proficient Spanish scholars and experienced workers.
Rain totals climb as Lawrence reports 5.59 inches since yesterday evening, the heaviest September downpour in the area. Topeka records 4.36 inches by 10 am, the wettest spell in years, with forecasts of unsettled tonight and gradual clearing tomorrow. Frost holds off, warming weather may benefit crops including winter wheat.
Crut eh Moss was injured when he slipped during a train change on his way home from Fort Sill where he had visited his son Todd Moss. With help from strangers he continued the journey and is now resting at 1146 Varmont Street with Mr. Frank Meierhieffer. About fifteen rooming houses and stricter rules for boarding houses are noted, with penalties for operating without a license. Wandel notes improvements and suggests steps for better compliance.
The $1,200 fund for soldiers nears a $1,500 goal but requires rapid daily averages near $100. Bank reports show scattered gifts from J. W. Howard, Emile Frank, David Babb, Frank Grover, Fred A.
