A freight wreck near Calico Illinois after an open switch caused a collision with a fast mail train. Several killed and over forty injured as gas tanks exploded leading to fire that burned all cars except the liners. Engineer Butler of Peru and Fireman Ellison of Lafayette crushed beneath the engine. Clerk Harding of Garyville among the injured. Passengers and crew were taken to Evansville for treatment.
A seven gun brigadier generals salute echoed from the summit of Pikes Peak Colorado this morning in honor of Brigadier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike who first recorded the existence and location of the mountain bearing his name.

New York September orders reached Captain Read er acting commander to deploy 180 blue jackets to League Island and move a battalion of marines to the yard. They will board the armored cruiser Tennasssa for Cuba while 280 marines are sent to Philadelphia. The yard is unusually bustling at night since the war began.
A bridge over the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks at List Street in Philadelphia collapsed as a work car with six men passed over. The car fell to the tracks. all six men were injured, one fatally. The bridge dropped just before an express from New York approached, the structure partly hidden by a curve.
In Chicago on September 26 Paul O Stensland pleaded guilty in a criminal court to charges of forgery and embezzlement. He was sentenced to an indeterminate prison term at Joliet, with a maximum of fourteen years. the scene showed him agitated before Judge Cartage as the plea was entered.
Stensland and his daughter Inga Sandberg arrived in Joliet at 2 26 p m accompanied by a sheriff and jailer. The group moved through the intake area as Mrs Sandberg fainted when her father was handed over to prison authorities in a tense moment.
A new typhoon hit Cagayas Val lay in northern Luzon causing total destruction in Barres Callaran Andlung Haggo and severe damage in four other towns. The tobacco region suffered near total crop loss with five lives reported lost.

State Senator W W Armstrong of Rochester was unanimously elected permanent chairman. The committee on institutions report, adopted without dissent, lauds President Roosevelt and says Governor Hughes administration passes into history as one of the greatest the state has ever known.
