The Air Force halted a ballistic missile test launched from a bomber aimed at Paddle Wheel Explorer VI. The attempt over Florida lasted about half an hour before technical difficulties forced a stop, with no plan to strike the satellite. The goal was to co-orbit briefly to gauge interception feasibility.
Pvt. Roberts Ronic, 21, from Gary Indiana, pleaded guilty to first degree murder in the ice pick slaying of Elizabeth Simpson a tavern operator in Fort Leavenworth area. He waived a preliminary hearing and was ordered to stand trial in district court. Ronic was arrested while attempting to depart the city and was on active duty status after a nine month sea service prior disciplinary issues. He was charged with stabbing the woman and leaving without settling a hotel bill. A separate charge of robbery involving Bemie Bemie Gennis was noted but not central to this case.
Prominent Asheville couple Mr and Mrs Berman McKenzie were rescued at dawn after their 19 foot boat struck an object off Cape Lookout. They had drifted at sea about 20 hours with life jackets lashed together. They were treated at Morehead City Hospital for exposure. The McKenzies w ere with brothers Julian and Murphy Murphy of Greensboro. the Murphys were saved earlier.
Funeral services for Mrs Etta L Bennett age 88 will be at 10 5 Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with a graveside at 2 30 p m. in the cemetery. Friends may call at Warren Chapel this evening and at the church until services. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran and had lived in Lawrence before moving to Roseville two years ago. Survivors include a daughter Nelle Lucas of the home a son Leonard Bennett of Utah a sister-in-law and several nephews and nieces from Iowa California and Texas.
KU administrators warn that enrollments may reach 17 000 by 1970, with lecture sections of 240 students and lab spaces at capacity. Ruth E McNair and other instructors handle large sections while classrooms are scattered across campus including Fraser Theater and Summerfield Hall.
Campus police report three flags were taken between 2 30 and 4 30 a m today from the Flags of All Nations exhibit in Strong Hall lobby at Kansas University. Flags from the Soviet Union Poland and Saudi Arabia were removed. The Polish flag was placed on a staff in front of the KU Post Office in Strong Hall basement, replacing the American flag found crumpled near the post office door. No arrests have been made.

Two juvenile offenders aged 12 and 13 burglarized the Washington Savings Bank, taking about $500 over two to three weeks while running errands for parents. They slipped under the teller window cage to grab bills and used some of the loot to buy a motor scooter.

Kathryn Karlene Kasky 21 and Robert N. Durrow 28, both of Lawrence, have received marriage licenses. The couple plans to wed.
Burlington Lines plans a special train from Kansas City to Lincoln for the Kansas Nebraska game on Oct 10. No current plans exist for a return trip from Lawrence to Lincoln. The train departs KC at 8 am and returns to KC 30 minutes after the game ends.
A muskrat escaped through an open window during a room class at the Community Building causing women to flee to tables. Police shot the animal with a 38 caliber slug ending the disturbance. Recreation supervisor Wayne Bly said it was a muskrat not part of the Recreation Commission program.
An four engine TAI airliner bound for Bamako and Abidjan crashed and exploded minutes after takeoff from Bordeaux Merignac killing 53 of 65 aboard. Three children survived among 12, including Sekou Sissoko health minister of the French Cameroons.
An Alaska DC4 airliner with 16 aboard crashed on Great Sitkin Island during approach to Adak. Wreckage found with no sign of life. crew and passengers all from Anchorage. Names listed for crew and military personnel not released pending notification.

Walter F. Munford 59 president of U S Steel Corp suffered a cerebral thrombosis and partial paralysis after surgery for a kitchen knife wound in his Chatham home. Boston specialists treat him with condition not critical and speaking difficulties reported.
Charles O. Radcliffe is recovering satisfactorily after a major operation at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He expects release from the hospital around the middle of next week.
