Fewer Kansas banks but deposits surged since 1914
A House judiciary subcommittee reports Kansas saw bank openings fall from 1,144 in 1914 to 607 by December 31, 1951 while deposits rose from 180 million to 141 million. Nationally, banks declined from 26.15 thousand to 14.618 thousand and deposits climbed to 185.796 billion. The panel warns consolidations create undue power and no Kansas bank ranks among the top 25. Chairman Geller notes staff views not necessarily shared by all members.
