Soviet forces report bayonet actions northwest of Stalingrad driving Germans from two hills and breaching the left wing. Berlin confirms heavy fighting with a possible delayed fall of the city as German defenses soften.
The five story federal courthouse and post office in Louisville Kentucky will be razed as part of a nation wide war salvage campaign. The building completed in 1893 and enlarged in 1925 is expected to yield 5000 to 6000 tons of wrought iron plus two tons of copper brass and other metals.
Wendell Willkie, after a long inspection trip near German-held Rzhev, observed artillery exchanges and street fighting from a hilltop. He spoke with seven German prisoners and noted their youth while visiting dugouts, defense works, and front maps alongside Soviet commanders.

Emporia civil air patrol will join Lyon county scrap metal drive Sunday to spot old machinery from the air within a 50 mile radius of Emporia. Hutchinson area chair Hi Heaps leads the drive in Hutchinson Reno county. Atchison county chair Claude Fitzgerald plans school closings October 18 for students to gather metal. Emporia grade school children collected 11 tons in the first week of the drive.
Chicago reports 15 brotherhoods of clerks telegraphers and signalmen representing over 900000 workers notified carriers of 20 cent an hour wage increases with a 70 cent minimum and a closed shop. Negotiations followed Chicago meetings last week with no public action announced. Previous settlement set nine cents rise Sept 1 1941 to Dec 1 1941 plus one cent thereafter.
London reports British forces place Madagascar under military rule to maintain order until a friendly regime is established. France’s sovereignty remains, with the French flag to fly as the island’s status is clarified. Aims include gaining cooperation from Vichy representatives and disarming or demobilizing remaining troops.
Washington Sept 25 The Office of Price Administration announced home fuel oil rationing in 30 eastern and middle western states will target an overall average reduction of 33 14 per cent of normal consumption instead of 25 per cent. OPA deputy administrator Paul M. O Leary said a 25 per cent cut would not meet the shortage and urged furnace conversions where possible and improved burner efficiency and home insulation.

Lawrence merchants announce new weekly hours effective October 1. Weekdays close at 5 30 with openings moved back by half an hour. Wednesdays close at 9 with 10 a m opening and Saturdays close at 9. Changes agreed after Merchants Bureau meeting at the Chamber of Commerce.
Washington September 25 Secretary of War Stimson cancelled arrangements for the October 12 heavyweight title bout between Joe Louis and Billy Conn. He said the standards and interests of the army do not permit the contest to be carried out.
