Smithsonian museum draws nearly 3 million visitors in first year
The National Museum of African American History and Culture has welcomed nearly 3 million visitors since opening last September. It offers 400,000 square feet of galleries with 40,000 artifacts including Harriet Tubman’s shawl and Emmett Till’s casket, while expanding programs on topics from religious intolerance to mass incarceration. Founding director Lonnie Bunch calls the museum a pilgrimage site and says it will continue to evolve to connect past and present issues.
