Corrections chief to become warden in Kansas
Charles Simmons, Kansas corrections secretary since 1994, will become warden of the El Dorado maximum security prison on Sept. 30. He will earn 78,436 dollars a year, less than his prior 97,830 as secretary, with the job in civil service. Governor Graves noted administration changes and Simmons cited staying in corrections as reasons for the move.

Gang dispute turns deadly near Wichita State University
In Wichita an early Sunday shootout in Fairmount Park left two men dead and a third wounded. Police linked the violence to rival gang members who had argued at a convenience store before moving to the park around 1 a.m. An 18-year-old died in the park and another man, in his late teens or early 20s, died while driving away. A third man was treated for a gunshot to the arm. Fairmount neighborhood groups have long sought safety grants to curb gang activity.
