Secretary of Defense Wilson federalized the Arkansas National Guard to enforce court orders for school integration in Little Rock. President Eisenhower authorized additional federal troops and ordered a nationwide TV address at 7 p.m. CST. Vice President Nixon accused Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus of responsibility for the Little Rock integration crisis. He said Faubus’ handling inspired extremists and expressed confidence that a broad majority supports the administration’s law and order stance. Nixon praised Florida Governor Le Roy Collins for urging the South away from racial furor.

Pleasant Weather Forecast Keeps Moderate Fall Warmth

Pleasant fall temperatures and mostly sunny skies are expected in Kansas today through midweek. Daily highs recently reached the upper 80s with a cooling trend toward the 70s by Wednesday. Monday peaked at 76 in the downtown area while early morning readings dipped to 49, later climbing to 86 by midafternoon. A low around 50 and highs in the 70s are forecast for Wednesday.

Cost of Living Rises in August

The government reports the cost of living rose two tenths of one percent in August marking the 12th straight monthly advance. The consumer price index reached 121 percent of the 1947-49 average, up 3.6 percent from a year ago, with food prices up while non food commodities held steady. Declines in fresh produce did not offset rises in pork and eggs as wage increases are set for about 187,000 workers in industries linked to the index.

Surprise and relief as federal troops ordered to Little Rock

The news of President Eisenhower ordering government commanded troops to take over Little Rock stunned residents and officials alike. Gov. Faubus and Lt. Gov. Directors and Leaders Voted Into Office in Township Elections

Farm Bureau voters in Grant, Eudora, Kanwaka, and Lecompton Townships chose directors and agricultural leaders. Grant named Lawrence Leonard director with Raymond Pine, Mrs. Arthur Robb, and Walter Heck as leaders. Eudora elected Carroll Gerstenberger as director with Eugene Westjerhouse, Mrs. Harold Boehle, and Harold Boehle. Lecompton named C. C. Mathews director with Ernest Brown, Mrs. A. L. Shaner, and Chester Hart. Kanwaka and Willow Springs held votes. Kanwaka named no director. Other townships awaiting elections include Marion, Palmyra, and Wakarusa.
