Bennett carries Kansas promotion to San Francisco

Gov. Robert F. Bennett led a Kansas promotion in San Francisco with Business Week plan a 20 page spread to lure industry and tourism. The effort by the Kansas Cavalry and KDED aims to reach plant site selectors and decision makers while highlighting 29000 manufacturing jobs created in six years. About 60 Cavalry members traveled to California for a three day sales push to 30 West Coast firms.

K-10 work near Lawrence may finish ahead of schedule

The 11 mile K-10 stretch through Douglas and Johnson counties could be done by late fall, well ahead of the March 1 estimate. Weather will largely affect completion as the contractor pushes to finish early. The Douglas County segment runs from east of Lawrence to the Johnson-Douglas line, with unclear opening times for the Johnson County portion.

Kansas University gears up for its home football opener with a Big Blue Rally at 7 p.m. in X-zone lot near the Kansas Union. Lawrence sales tax fund slips 1 percent in June

Lawrence halved cent sales tax proceeds declined 1 percent in June compared with 1967, totaling 64529 versus 65174. Among three jurisdictions using the tax Lawrence saw a drop while Topeka and Johnson County posted gains. Two month totals show Lawrence up 6.1 percent, with Topeka up 10.5 and Johnson County up 14.3. funds support police and fire departments.

KU Student Tamara Pilkington Improves After Traffic Crash

Tamara Pilkington 18 a Kansas University student from Hays improved to fair condition this morning at KU Medical Center after a Sept 10 traffic accident. She suffered head and leg injuries when the car she rode in struck a bridge abutment near Lawrence. Driver Robert C. Godfrey 22 of Prairie Village died in the collision.

Grade schools off on Monday in District 497

Lawrence District 497 elementary students have no school on Monday as teachers participate in in service training. Morning sessions occur at their own buildings with an afternoon district meeting at Broken Arrow School followed by grade level meetings.

Springer re-elected director at large of Kansas Food Dealers

Rusty Springer owner of Rusty’s Food Centers in Lawrence was re elected to a Kansas Food Dealers Assn at large post at the 49th annual Wichita convention. The event drew over 400 retailers and suppliers. Springer also serves as a director of the National Association of Retail Grocers and presented the MARGUS KFDA Good Government Award to Bob Kleier of Wellsville at the Tuesday luncheon.

Fuel bill aid program in Kansas extended amid deadline confusion

Kansas SRS extended the SCRIP fuel assistance deadline after mixed messages from the governor and heating bills for seniors and disabled households. The program offers 50 to eligible elderly or disabled households and up to 250 for past due fuel bills incurred since Oct 1 1976, with funds pending final reports.
