Coroner: Murder charge in infant Oliver Ortiz case
In a Douglas County court, coroner Dr. Erik Mitchell testified about the 9 month old Oliver Ortiz death. Judge Sally Pokorny ordered Eudora daycare worker Buchhorn to stand trial for first degree murder with a seven day jury trial set to begin February 12. Oliver died Sept. 29, 2016, in Buchhorn’s care.

Shooting suspect charged with murder in Lawrence
Steven A. Drake II of Lawrence, 20, was formally charged with first degree murder for the fatal shooting of 26 year old Bryce S. Holladay. Drake, who claimed Holladay broke into his home, appeared via video from jail in Douglas County District Court.

Regents aim to restore 2015 budget cuts as top priority
