Man Buys Bookstore When He Only Wanted a Shave
NASHVILLE AP. Robert J. Bedford an Indianapolis shoe salesman visiting the Grand Ole Opry went downtown to buy shaving cream and instead purchased Hooberry's bookstore after the owner broke a hip. Bedford and partner Roy Berry agreed to buy the stock, about 15 000 books, and ship it to Carmel Indiana where the shop will reopen under the same name. Bedford said he bought the bookstore but still needs shaving cream.

Miller Seeks KU Vote on Student Activity Fee Referendum

Fire in Verner Newman Jr home blamed on short
Verner Newman Jr reported a $150 fire caused by a short in auto wiring Friday night. Hose wiring and smoke damage occurred. He disputed the Fire Department report that an air conditioning hose broke, saying he put out the fire with water himself.

Funeral services for Miss Gilges announced
Miss Gilges born December 25, 1951 in Ottawa worked at Hallmark Card Co in Lawrence. She is survived by her parents LaVerne and Mrs Gilges of Baldwin and five brothers Verlyn Elvin Winston Rodney Leslie and a sister Ardyth. Grandmothers Mrs Mae Gilges and Mrs Sarah Lindholm also survive. Burial will be in Worden Cemetery with services Friday at Worden United Methodist Church.

Bond Posted After LMH Release In Hooper Case
Catherine Hooper 19 of 1316 Kg released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital and posted 2000 bond on a felony charge after Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrested her following a marijuana cutting operation northwest of Lecompton where she was shot in the leg. Her husband Billy 19 remains jailed on the same charges. Two men pleaded guilty to felony drug counts in district court and another case was dismissed. Joseph Berg had misdemeanor marijuana charges dropped in county court for insufficient evidence. Nixon 20 and Hammersley 19 faced prison terms after pleading guilty to marijuana sale and LSD charges with Oct. 1 and Oct. 4 sentencing set. Hammersley allowed class attendance and light jail time temporarily.

Weaver in Good Condition After Motorcycle Mishap
Steven H. Weaver, 21, of 129 South Park St., is in good condition at Watkins Memorial Hospital after a pedestrian motorcycle collision at 3 09 p m on Massachusetts 190 feet north of South Park. He suffered injuries to his right side and cuts. The motorcycle operator, Charles E. Gallagher, 21, of 1800 Brook, was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Damages to the motorcycle were about 200 dollars.
