Vice President Richard Nixon told a large Indiana rally that Communist leaders in New York show the United States must keep military and economic strength to deter Khrushchev. Sheriff Custer A. Duniton put turnout at 26,000 as Nixon and wife Pat campaigned in Fort Wayne. He contrasted Kennedy as naive on communism and beholden to unions during a Midwest swing including Michigan.
Hazy skies and thick clouds over Lawrence hid the sun eclipse on Tuesday afternoon. The event began at 3 09 PM and peaked at 4 59 PM with 61 4 percent of the sun covered before clouds fully blocked it.
Douglas County Register of Deeds Harold Beck is listed in good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a surgery and a fairly good night. He had entered the hospital for the procedure.
Mrs. Ruth Nash was reelected president of the Douglas County Mental Health Association at its annual meeting in the Kansas Union. Other officers include Dr. Ralph Reed as vice president Miss Evadne Laptad as secretary and Larry Crum as treasurer. About 75 people attended the event which marked the 10th anniversary of the Bert Nash Mental Health Clinic.
Disaster feeding was the topic for Frank Burge Kansas Union director at the Lawrence Sertoma Club meeting Tuesday night at the Eldridge Hotel. Burge showed slides to illustrate his talk. More than 240 persons in Lawrence now have qualified to serve as disaster feeders should they be needed. Another 60 are working to qualify. Charles Couch of Kansas City Kan governor of Kansas clubs presented a merit achievement pin to O F E Stinson for his work on life membership.
Rival candidate Donald C. Rarick was beaten at the Atlantic City convention as he challenged president David J. McDonald. Rarick and an identified supporter were assaulted amid claims of pro McDonald bias and calls for a democratic election process under Landrum Griffin protections.
Khrushchev met at the U N as Eisenhower planned a New York visit and a luncheon with Latin American delegates at the Waldorf Astoria. Police clashed with demonstrators, eggs and firecrackers flew, and protests spread near Tito’s headquarters and Castro’s hotel. The General Assembly opened its heaviest agenda yet with 87 topics, including Hungary and Tibet.
John Anderson maintains a lead over George Docking by 1 648 to 1 476 after four days at the State Fair straw poll. Uncommitted voters total 294 with Schoeppel leading Theis 1 980 to 906 and 532 undecided. Nixon dominates Kennedy 2 050 to 1 122 with 246 undecided.
Certificates of title to land in the new state lake area near Lawrence have been sent to the State Fish and Game Commission attorney after delays raised by officials. The commission aims to buy land outright and will pursue condemnation if needed. The Wauka Taug Wildlife Association holds its first fall meeting at 8 p.m. Monday in Baldwin’s American Legion Hall, featuring a film “Wagon Trails” and local scenes.
At a $100-a-plate Democratic rally with about 1300 diners, Kennedy criticized the Eisenhower administration and the Soviets. He argued it is dangerous to stay silent about America’s future and urged being outspoken about security and strength.
Kansas City area voters heard Republican candidate Robert F. Ellsworth accuse Second District Congressman Newell George of backing Tennessee Valley Authority bonds. Ellsworth argued TVA power draws jobs from Kansas City by allowing Tennessee plants to compete for industries, citing a $750 million bond issuance for TVA power plants.
A 21 year old Lawrence man Paul Findley suffered bruises after a midday crash at 23rd and La Sts when his motor scooter collided with a car driven by 34 year old John Barry. Findley was treated and discharged from Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the damage was listed as minor.
Jewish New Year services set for 7 30 p m today and 9 a m Thursday in Danforth Chapel on the Kansas University campus. The events are jointly sponsored by the Hillel Councilorship at KU and the Lawrence Jewish Community.
Michael Marconett 11 son of Mr and Mrs Clif Marconett of near Overbrook was reported in satisfactory condition at Stormont Vail Hospital Topeka after a shotgun misfire injured his left forearm while loading a tractor at his family's farm He is responding to treatment and is not expected to lose the arm.
Three African medical students in Moscow accuse Soviet authorities of constant discrimination and threats as they leave Moscow. The trio Theophilus Okonkwo of Nigeria Andrew R Amar of Uganda and Michel Ayih of Togo say they and many others are quitting due to pressure and restrictions.
