A mob overpowered the sheriff at the Olathe jail and hanged Dudley, a convicted slayer. Witnesses report the mob arrived in motor cars, targeting the home of Dudley and his victims, a German man and another resident, in a neighborhood nearby.
In Olathe Kansas a mob seized Bert Dudley after a murder conviction and hanged him from a telephone pole. Sheriff’s wife and others aided in the jail breach, and the mob then burned or disposed of the body. The incident followed a swift verdict after Mueller and wife were killed over a mule dispute and a ransom-like search ensued. Authorities later recovered Dudley’s body from a pole as the town confronted the lynching.
Lawrence county reports a drowning on the Kaw River as farmer Marsouin, 40, from a Lecompton area settlement, drowned when his boat overturned with watermelons aboard. His 18 year old brother survived by swimming to shore after the craft flipped near the bank. Local inquiry and body recovery followed.
An effort to shift Haskell College football opener against K U Normal in Lawrence from September 6 to Friday September 29 is under discussion by Coach A M Venice and Bethany authorities due to a calendar clash. Former Kansas governor Stubbs will stump for Republican presidential hopeful Hughes in Kansas this fall. He travels from Texas and will appear where results are in doubt. Stubbs says Hughes is a great man and will make an able president, urging support for the ticket.
The Hinesley team defeated Asher 49 to 28 to win the Lawrence county era tournament held at the Country Club. Early lead by Asher gave way to a late surge by Hinesley as points were tallied. Funeral services for Nancy Jane Brawley were held, with burial in Clinton. The Republican central committee will meet September 29 at the courthouse to plan the campaign opening in October.
