Policy on underage drinking at Free State and Lawrence dances
Free State High requires a student caught under the influence at dances to be held until a parent collects them, with a three day suspension that can drop to one day if the student agrees to counseling. Police officers assist staff but no legal action is taken. Lawrence High also notifies parents, uses a school resource officer at dances, and follows standard suspension procedures before involvement of law enforcement only for driving under influence.

Lawrencian flown to hospital after wreck
A Lawrence man Brent McClintick aged 31 was flown by air ambulance to a Kansas City hospital after a one vehicle wreck on Douglas County Road 1055 north of Baldwin. He lost control of his Dodge pickup around 2 50 a m and crashed into a ditch. The incident was reported by Douglas County Sheriff Office Lt Kari Wempe who said he was taken to the University of Kansas hospital. The county commission delayed action on a waiver to seek a proposal from Finney Turnipseed for the Lecompton Bridge project and will reconvene Wednesday to consider the request. The Lecompton Bridge over the Kansas River links Douglas and Jefferson counties and requires roadway replacement at an estimated project cost of four million dollars to be shared by the two counties. Construction would likely begin in 2007.
