APMe Public Service Award finalists named for 1969
The APME selects ten newspapers as finalists for the Public Service Award to honor outstanding local or state service. Finalists include Milwaukee Sentinel Chicago Today Miami Herald New York Daily News Pottstown Mercury Boston Globe Chicago Sun Times and others with investigations on welfare misuse public funds political influence and institutional reform. The winner will be announced at the APME convention in Orlando Florida November 16-20.

Kemper Jury Recommends Four Life Sentences
In Platte City Missouri a nine woman jury recommended four life terms for Benedict Louis Kemper 16 after finding him guilty of slaying four members of the Marion Merrigan family on October 10 at their farm near Conception. The sole surviving Merrigan child Sue was present. The judge set Oct 15 for a motion for a new trial. Kemper pleaded innocent by reason of insanity.
