Oklahoma lawmakers prepare for a Wednesday assembly amid a battle with Governor Walton over authority and a push to impeach him. The Klan and mob violence are cited as motives for convening and potential military action to restore order across the state.
A signed Associated Press statement issued to the Assoc. es accuses Governor J. C. Walton of using the Ku Klux Klan as a peg on which a political bankrupt hangs the tattered habiliments of grotesque failure while making a last bid for public favor.
Grand Dragon Jawett of the Oklahoma Ku Klux Klan says membership has risen despite alleged political pressure and “insidious insults” offering protection if Klan members withdraw. He claims Walton’s fight against the Klan is public show, criticizing impeachment and calls for a special session while noting unsteady public support and disputed loyalty questions.
General Markham overseeing county under Governor Waltons martial law recognizes civil court authority to summon him. At 1:50 p.m. he appeared in Judge Hunt's district court with Ben Sikes Grover Sikes and Earl Sack, seeking release via writs of habeas corpus filed by their wives Saturday. Judge Hunt will decide merits later today.
Associated Press dispatch quotes Adjutant General B. H. Markham saying he was not authorized by Governor Walton to mobilize additional troops for Oklahoma City. The denial followed reports of an order to block convening of the state legislature next Wednesday.
Crop specialists H A Land and Mr Buntzel from Manhattan visited Lawrence to inspect two varieties of certified corn at Fred Laptad’s farm. They evaluated Ninety Day Red and Reid’s varieties and planned to visit Leavenworth to inspect further farms.
Tryouts for the Boys Glee Club were conducted this afternoon at Lawrence High School. No further details on participants or results were provided.

Early tickets are $10 while the next tier rises to $12, admitting two football games, two dramatic club plays at Bowersock, and intercollegiate debates. Reservations for athletic events are free, says athletics director Dy Allen.
The R O T C IX unit on the Fowler shops second floor is completed and open for inspection. It features updated training devices including three hundred new Springfield .30 calibre rifles and indoor range rifles. An explosion during a gas engine test at the Bureau of Standards in Washington killed L. L. Laver and injured at least nine others, with four seriously burned. The blast wrecked the building housing the test.

The group organized to press Ford for president and to push what it calls an economic reform agenda for the United States.
Residents in Vinland will vote tomorrow at Grange hall on issuing a $10,000 bond to build a new rural high school to replace a burned building. The election marks the third attempt, with prior votes defeated by narrow margins amid tax and financing concerns.
In a foreign squadron operation two marine corps seaplanes took off from Port au Prince for Guan tanamo then aimed for St Louis, with an overnight stop under suspicious conditions. New York reports 2500 members of web pressmen local No. 25 have been expelled from the International Pressmen's and Assistants' Union of America. Lawrence men said a Toncae Noxie event today would have highlighted the value of the hard surfaced highway. They argued residents living away from the highway cannot reach Tonganoxie because the roads are extremely muddy.

Sept 20 The Council of Nations did not act on Italy's repudiation of the League's competency to intervene in the Linlesi week crisis. It will study the covenant's interpretation with jurists, avoiding public debate on Italy's refusal and Salandra's opposition.
A paved highway between Kansas City and Topeka has three short unpaved gaps about a block long. Heavy traffic has left mud and ruts through the gaps. Chat and rock placed to stabilize the road mix with mud, making travel difficult. The rest of the highway is in splendid condition.
Earl Lambert of St Louis is charged with auto theft in a case involving a Dodge touring car owned by Ed Klein. He was brought to Lawrence from Pittsburg Ban by Deputy Sheriff Ralph Lawrence last night and is being held at the county jail. arraignment had not occurred today.
The county agent H C Colgluaier is not at his Baldwin office next Wednesday as usual due to bad roads. He was away yesterday because muddy roads prevented farmers from reaching the office.
Probate Judge Menger reported that as weather cooled in September the number of marriage licenses issued at his office began to decrease. Today there were no licenses granted by Judge Menger.

Washington Sept 20 The Tay division cavalry drills near Marfa Texas for maneuvers from September 25 to October 1. More than a thousand unmounted men of the 1st cavalry division will join the exercise. The march from Fort Bliss to Marfa covers 300 miles and Fort Clark to Marfa 275 miles. Commanded by Maj. Gen. Robert L. House the division now numbers 4068 men versus 5170 peace strength and 7163 war strength.
An exhibit titled TAUNTINGS features oil paintings by Delle Miller of Kansas City, shown at the University Book Store on Massachusetts Street from September 22. Miller, a frequent Kansas City exhibitor, painted campus scenes in Lawrence including The Bridge at Lawrence and Haskell from Mount Oread. She won a Special Purchase Prize in 1922 and a fifty dollar premium at the Missouri state fair for The Inner Harbor.
County superintendent O. J. Lane urges teachers to enroll for the Kansas State Teachers' Association meeting in Topeka on October 18 19 and 20. Railroad rates of a fare and a half are offered to those who intend to attend. Enrollment may be made with J. Lane or F. L. Pinet, secretary of the KS TA.
Samuel Scott files a quiet title action in district court against William A. Simpson and others, seeking adjudication of ownership and related rights in a disputed property. The filing names respondents and outlines the legal action to determine title and claimants.
A black flag once carried into Lawrence by Quantrill’s raiders 65 years ago may shift custody to the city of Lawrence or the Nan-Se Historical Society. The flag’s owner, H. H. Sutherland of El Paso, acquired it from Martin Lohmannther’s widow. The piece bears the words Semper Tirants and a crude snake emblem with Don’t Tread on Me, and its tale includes the Kansas raid’s deadly fire, rescues, and dramatic personal histories linked to Jack Swartz and Henry Brown.
J A Ralston of Topeka was fined $30 and costs before Justice Clark for driving fifty miles an hour on the Fort to Fort highway. He was arrested Saturday on the charge and paid $100 to appease in court today before Justice Clark.
