Family sues over first gene therapy death at Penn
The family of Jesse Gelsinger 18 of Tucson Arizona filed a wrongful death suit Monday against his doctors and the University of Pennsylvania. The suit accuses clinicians of carelessness negligence and recklessness after his Sept 17 1999 death four days after gene therapy begun. The university said care met high standards and he knew the risks. Gelsinger had an inherited disorder affecting nitrogen processing and managed it with drugs and a low protein diet.
