Refinishing antiques may boost or ruin value
Kovel's Antiques notes refinishing can add thousands to value for rare 18th century pieces, but a bad job adds nothing. It cites a June 2011 Manheim PA auction where a 19th century blanket chest with 20th century paint sold for 450. Also explains modern pieces may be refinished to fit new decor and lists several example items with values from 40 to 715 dollars.
