London reports the British cabinet met over the Near Eastern crisis with notes of unity among British, French and Italian commands. The fleet movement, Turkish actions, and Australia’s potential contribution formed core topics as Curzon prepared for Paris talks.
The Rev. J. C. Trotter, jailed on embezzlement charges tied to Brooks Institute in Hartshorn and of wire desertion, escaped from Pittsburg County Jail. Jail bars were found sawn in two when jailers inspected the cell early this morning.
Weather outlook shows showers and cooler conditions tonight and Tuesday with cloudy periods in the south. Temperatures noted with yesterday's highs and lows. Kansas City Kansas Sept 18 Excess prize money of 6000 may be presented to the widow of Roscoe Sarles a Los Angeles driver killed in the 300 mile automobile race here yesterday. Tommie Milton winner announced today. The six finishers arranged a conference to consider disposition of the unclaimed prize money as cars dropped out. Twelve prizes offered totaling 30000 were claimed by the six victors: Milton 10000 Flarty 5000 Elliot 12750 Malford 2750 Wonderlith 2500 Hill 1750. Hospital reports for injured drivers and mechanics showed improvement with near full recovery expected. Speedway receipts yesterday estimated at 275000. Under the Legion contract 50 percent of receipts over 100000 will be divided between Kansas and Missouri Legion departments.
In Jackson California on September 18, officials say the Kennedy mine has been timbered and a passage opened to the Argonaut at the 4200 foot level where forty seven miners have been entombed for over three weeks. Ventilation doors were secured to prevent rekindling a fire while debris is cleared. A drill from Kennedy to Argonaut penetrated the workings and rescue teams prepared to enter once bulkheads are set and the draft is controlled. The Kennedy crews at the 3990 foot level earned a $5000 bonus for breaking through ahead of the Argonaut.
Montreal reports the rapid return of the Canadian dollar to near par as bankers credit orderly business, bumper crops, rising industry activity, and higher government revenues. They say renewed prosperity, with strikes unlikely to derail momentum, is restoring confidence and supporting the currency.
Chicago reports flow of returns as up to 50,000 of 300,000 strikers may resume work. Roads embracing Baltimore plan include Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Chicago and Northwestern Baltimore Ohio Sea Board Air Line and Green Bay and Western. Foremen restored to bosses to avert repeat disorders after recent strikes.
The Linwood electric transmission line to connect Bouvier Springs with the local plant is not finished. Transformer connections caused delays and workers continue the setup. They expect completion this afternoon or tomorrow, with lines reaching Twelfth Street and hookups planned by week’s end.

Sheriff John arrested Germoe Gallas and Lino Artuino as they walked toward Lawrence from Noria. Gallas wore a tight vest with nine pints of whiskey hidden in compartments. Irbane carried a basket with pies concealing nine pints. The men were charged with possession of liquor and jailed in Ash County jail.
City water department reports sea green algae filling the river, causing a green tint and odor in the water. Water is being treated to kill the microscopic organisms and the city is filtering all supply to restore normalcy within a day or so. Public utility officials say the algae are not dangerous and advise continued use of the water. Tests are underway to identify the organism and prevent filter clogging during treatment.
A group of British and American Sulgrave Institution members including Lord Wakefield will visit Lawrence next Monday. They will tour the University and city, attend a 1 o'clock Friday morning celebration, and address students about fostering English language and cultural ties.
A group of young people from the First Methodist church gave a program at the county home yesterday afternoon. The program included musical selections Bible readings talks and prayers and was led by Mrs Speers. The elderly and infirm inmates were thoroughly appreciative of the treat.
Mr and Mrs Siler recently returned from China and plan to return in October to the mission field. Carl Siler spoke at the Christian church yesterday about missionary work and his seven years of service in China.
Frank Evans, owner of the old property at Ninth and Shire streets, is tearing down the structure to clear space for three modern store buildings.
Frank Brooks city clerk of Lawrence, formerly U S Consul to Smyrna, reads accounts of Smyrna’s burning with unusual interest. He recalls Smyrna’s once quartered population of Greeks, Jews, and Turks and notes the city’s famed export of wines. He says Greeks evacuated, the Muslim quarter remained, and Smyrna endured a third major destruction after earthquakes.
At Westminster Abbey Dr and Mrs L Webster Fox of Philadelphia presented two wreaths to Canon Sterr for the Dean and the tomb of the unknown British war dead. One wreath from the Society of British Women in America and the other from the Transatlantic Society of Americans were laid on the tomb amid hundreds of witnesses. The earlier Washington burial involved Mrs Fox presenting a wreath for the unknown American soldier.
London reports accuse Germany of dumping potatoes on the British market to undercut prices. Farmers had earned 10 to 18 pounds per ton before the war, but prices have fallen to as low as 2 pounds as German and Dutch producers flood imports. The German government previously boosted potato growth for food reserves and alcohol distillation, now sending the surplus abroad.
Allen County plans the first overhead viaduct to remove a grade crossing near the Santa Fe tracks, spanning a town and a half miles southwest of here. The long structure aims to meet future demand by allowing four tracks to pass through.

Observer Miles, son of Lt Gen Nelson A Miles, detached from Fort Sill artillery to serve as military attache in Constantinople on the staff of Rear Admiral Bristol. He was ordered to proceed without unnecessary delay after serving as a military observer in Europe during the early war days.
Levis Andre, father of James Saunders, arrived in Lawrence from Liveumne Prange with language barriers. He could not state his destination clearly even after reaching Lawrence, and Howard Parker arranged a phone call to his daughter Mrs Eaanders to reach her.
Ro Richards sues Threshermens Mutual Insurance Association of Topwki claiming the company insured a threshing machine and failed to pay after it was destroyed. He seeks judgment for 1000 dollars and costs.
Probate Judge Menger issued licenses and presided over ceremonies for two couples on Saturday afternoon. George Olmstead and Mary Keltner of Kansas City wed, and Samuel L. Smith and Ida M. Ball were also married.
The Lawrence high school will hold its next assembly on Monday September 25 at the Methodist Episcopal church. The program has not yet been announced. Mrs. W. B. Utton departed for Los Angeles to live with her son. Dr. Albright, chiropractor, is noted in the report.
The 1922 world championship series will begin October 4 in New York City. Negotiations at a joint meeting set opening arrangements assuming the New York Giants win the National League title. Prices for 1921 remain in effect for the event.
The University Concert Course season ticket sale for the first week is the largest in the course history with about half of the Gib SO seats sold. tenor Marie Wharleo of the Metropolitan Opera Company will open the course two weeks from Saturday night in Robinson Gymnasium. Season tickets cost 1, 1.50, and 88, and orders should be sent to the manager.
About 240 student activity tickets have sold from an expected 1,500. Each ticket costs 8 dollars, or 28 dollars for year admissions. Sales are handled by W. B. G. Aland and the men's student council, with tickets available at the athletic office in the gym. Dr FL CL Allen, director of athletics, says sales may rise around the frontball game as students are currently busy with other matters.
The University operates a Topeka branch managed by Arthur Johnson and CJ Geel with Harry Turner and Arthur Johneo involved in formation as Cardinal Coal Company. The local branch is run by Turner and Gorrill under Topeka oversight and CJ Geel.
The Chamber of Commerce will have its first luncheon in the new quarters tomorrow at 12 30. Work to move remaining equipment and prepare the space continues. Raymond R. Gibbs of the Kansas City Chamber visited and praised the building promising a broader program of usefulness and service.
Rush for hunting licenses Saturday broke records at the county clerk’s office for Runtime licenses. George Brune, county clerk, issued TT licenses with sixty issued on Saturday afternoon. Local hunters report prospects are good for a fine duck season.
An extension course for Lawrence high school teachers is being developed under the direction of Dr. R A Schwegler. More than twenty teachers have shown interest in forming the program.
