Saigon AP reports nine Americans and seven Vietnamese killed in Vietnam war accidents over four days. Seventeen Vietnamese and ten Americans were wounded. The heaviest loss came Saturday as eight from the 1st Infantry Division died and ten were wounded near an artillery base 33 miles northwest of Saigon. A U S Marine also died.
The Lawrence City Commission ruled a protest petition against the last 15th Street sidewalk sufficient and moved to a new three resolution strategy to pave sections of East 15th and Connecticut while authorizing sidewalk work from Maryland to Haskell. The panel also plans a public hearing to revise the zoning ordinance restricting service stations and awaits recommendations from a chamber of commerce representative. In other news, a Marine helicopter incident south of the demilitarized zone resulted in exchanges of fire with civilian casualties and ongoing investigations by U S authorities.
Chancellor Chalmers prepares to lead a KU alumni party and team entourage to Lubbock for the 7 36 p m kickoff against Texas Tech. The trip includes 150 backers, a chartered jet from Kansas City, and a return to Lawrence after a late Saturday night flight.
A Kansas Legislative Council committee continues studying Reserve Officer Training programs at state universities and colleges. The report notes voluntary participation at most schools except Pittsburg State College where two-year basic ROTC is mandatory for qualified male students. The board of regents may permit ROTC to remain optional. Kansas State University must teach military tactics as a land grant institution. The council expects no policy changes to ROTC programs.
An unidentified man robbed a Kansas City service station at 31st and Garfield. Otis Harris and two employees handed over money before the gunman spoke to an outside accomplice. Harris fired a 38 caliber revolver, hitting the robber in the chest. the assailant died. The accomplice fled and police pursue him.
Police report a bank deposit of 644.52 dollars taken from an unlocked safe at Coast to Coast Hardware, 1832 Mass., between 4 30 and 5 30 Tuesday. The bag held 225 dollars cash and 419 52 dollars in checks stamped for deposit only. Three men were in the store when it disappeared, per detective notes.
David R. Anderson 23 of 1800 Engel Rd is listed in good condition at Watkins Memorial Hospital after a 10 39 a m collision at 25th and Iowa that killed the other driver Mrs Ester Vander Woude 29 of Rt 5 A second year law student from Davenport he suffered shock and possible internal injuries Witnesses say Vander Woude lost control of her northbound car and skidded into Anderson's southbound vehicle in the southbound lane The fatal car was traveling about 45 mph and Anderson about 35 mph Damages were 1500 for Andersons car and 2000 for Vander Woude's car The body was taken to Hollebeek Cele Funeral Home Grand Rapids MI where services will be announced later The widower Jack Vander Woude is an intern at Wadsworth Veterans Hospital in Leavenworth Survivors include her parents and in laws The accident raised 15 other incidents in the day with several minor damages reported.
Indian Creek Reservoir near Markleeville California now holds a billion gallons of treated sewage water said to meet drinking water standards. A 22 inch pipeline from South Lake Tahoe delivers the water through lime treatment filtration charcoal and chlorination before release into the 27 acre lake where 8000 rainbow trout were planted in a test. Researchers monitor weekly and call the water pure enough to drink with caveats.
NASA plans count down changes for Apollo 12 including eliminating one shift and reducing launch pad facilities. Saturn 5 Apollo launches will run every four months, not two, with two shift operations and a five day work week on tests. NASA says moonport workforce will drop by 5 600 to about 18 000 by July next year.

Springfield Illinois AP Ralph T. Smith speaker of the Illinois House was named by Gov Richard B Ogilvie to fill the U S Senate seat left by the death of Everett M Dirksen Smith a Republican from Alton was the expected choice after Atty Gen William J Scott withdrew Monday Rep John B Anderson R Ill of Rockford was a strong contender to succeed Dirksen who died Sept 7 in Washington Ogilvie announced from his office Mrs Smith and Sen Charles H Percy were present The governor said he telephoned President Nixon Tuesday to tell him of his decision.
In Little Rock Arkansas police report the theft of 4002 dollars in cash and checks from the Police and Courts Building. The money was taken from an unlocked safe in the Violations Bureau office about 20 feet from the desk sergeant's station.
Larry L. Devers aged 18 and a 17 year old Lawrence youth are held after a burglary at Brooks Lunch Lawrence. Devers faces second degree burglary and larceny with a $3000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept 29. A 22 year old man was questioned but not arrested.
Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Kansas University host a stag mixer next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Broken Arrow Park. Reservations due Thursday afternoon.
