Gonzales says DOJ will seek to keep pledge in schools

Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales said the Justice Department will fight to overturn a federal court ruling blocking the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools for its reference to God. He argued such expressions are constitutional local identity and not a violation of church-state separation, signaling a potential Supreme Court appeal. The judge’s ruling and a Becket Fund appeal set the stage for further court action while political leaders in Kansas and Congress react.
