Allied forces led by Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark strike the Salerno front driving German troops back from the bridgehead and seizing the beachhead. Montgomery’s Eighth Army advances from the south toward Naples and Rome as reinforcements flood in and air and sea power pound German positions.
Soviet central front under Gen Constantine Rokossovsky drives west between Bryansk and Nezhin and seizes Novgorod-Seversky after forcing the Desna. Nezhin fall clears path toward Kiev as Germans lose a continuous line. Rokossovsky shifts to direct assault after aiding the Bryansk front against Orel.
