A huge morning gathering in the Lawrence pavilion heard welcome by Congressman J D Bowersock and a response by A W Smith as the G A R reunion opening honored survivors. Music by the Laskell Institute band and Lawrence ladies filled the program amid era memories and patriotic tributes.
A sale of the stock of the Gavotte company paper occurred to Everett and Robert By Everett. The paper’s policy remains unchanged. Robert I. Everett will assume business management, while Martindale has left for Excelsior Springs for health reasons, with future plans pending his recovery.
Ogden September 16 reports convening to discuss cul ivation methods for vast western irrigation districts and the legal framework of irrigation and land laws. President Theodore Roosevelt departed Nagamore Hill for a two day excursion with plans to inspect the Ellis Island immigration station and attend ceremonies for a monument honoring New Jersey soldiers at Antietam. He is accompanied by Mrs. Roosevelt, Secretary Loeb, and guests including professors Hart and Moore and Grant Lafaryge. The naval yacht Sylph carried them to New York as weather turned unsettled.
Michael Donovan, a stevedore, was shot and died after a firefight between police and east side toughs in Manhattan. John Ciro, a driver, was wounded as four men were questioned and police from three stations were deployed to quell the unrest. The motive linked to Day Bernstein, a saloon keeper, remains disputed as both sides vow retaliation.
Manila reports that about one hundred fanatics assaulted the constabulary headquarters at San Jose Luzon in an attempt to storm the post. After a fierce battle the attackers were repulsed with eight killed and five constables killed or wounded.
United States cableship Burnside sailed from Seattle to lay a 600 mile cable segment from Lynn Canal near Sitka toward Juneau and Sitka with 250 miles between towns. The overhaul remains on schedule for completion and return by October 10.
A five story telephone building at Sixth and Wyandotte streets burned out today in Kansas City. The blaze damaged the main switchboard and disrupted service in the business district and toll connections to outside towns for an estimated 40 to 60 days. Loss on the building and apparatus is about 650 dollars, fully covered by insurance. The origin of the fire is unknown.
Chattanooga Sept 11 Andrew Carnegie will be asked to fund free libraries for negroes in Chattanooga and other cities. Frank J Weston a prominent New York negro attorney and others have sent a memorial to Mr Carnegie. A delegation plans to call on him in the near future.
Manila reports bubonic plague in the Londo suburb with eighty deaths among one hundred cases. Cabu in Visayas province records twelve cases and nine deaths due to the illness. Cholera spreads across parks amid rule absence. Also notes on relief committee meeting in Rock Island and various social news items.
Frost hit Kansas and western Missouri last night with readings as low as 36 in Concordia and 40 in Lodge City, injuring corn and other crops. The frost extended into Nebraska, Iowa, and northern Colorado, threatening further damage to grain and potato crops, with estimates of losses in carloads and bushels. Government experts warn of continued frost tonight.

Mr. Branson who earned his A B and A M from the University last year is in town visiting friends after summer collecting specimens in Western Kansas. This fall he will go to the Chicago university where he has a teaching fellowship in paleontology. Some change has been made to the University timetable with morning sessions from 8 1 2 to 12 15 and afternoon from 1 30 to 5 30. Mrs. Mary F Wood widow of Ilanse Wood died at Simmons hospital last night and funeral will be held tomorrow at 2.00 from the First Methodist church. The marriage of Miss Bertha Protsch and Mr Verner Ruddieston takes place this evening at the bride’s brother’s home on Kentucky street. The sun shone today and promised pleasant weather. The Etiwanda club of young men held its first party at Everatt hall last evening.

A one week old child of Mr and Mrs Noble Rentz died and was buried in Oak Hill cemetery.
