Old Settlers Banquet at Bismarck Grove Recalls Kansas Pioneers

A large crowd gathered for the old settlers’ reunion at Bismarck Grove with a noon banquet, afternoon and evening sessions, speeches by Legate Thacher and Anthony, music led by N O Stevens, and a final adjournment with thanks to Union Pacific. Notable attendees included Dr J P Root Wyandotte and Col D R Anthony Leavenworth, plus Lawrence and Topeka figures.

Funeral of Hugh J Hastings editor of the Commercial Advertiser

The funeral of Hugh J Hastings late editor and proprietor of the Commercial Advertiser was held this morning from St Leos church and drew many prominent citizens. The remains lay in front of the altar, black draped, and floral offerings from Commercial employees abounded. The church was crowded. all Commercial staff attended. Low mass requiem was offered by Rev. Fathers Ducey and Tole with a brief eulogy by Ducey. Pallbearers included Kent Arthur, Roscoe Conkling, Hugh J Jewett, Jay Gould, Samuel Sloan, General Eckert, J Van Schaik, Wm G Weed, Isaac W England, J Nelson Tappan and John Hoey. The remains were taken to Albany for interment.

Attempt to beat 2 14 record in $2000 purse race

Today’s event focused on Eyeset aiming to break his 2:14 record for a $2,000 purse. He warmed in 2:20 then delivered a remarkable final trial with a 34 second first quarter, 1:00 half, 1:39 three quarters, finishing 210M without a misstep or distress, earning strong showings.
