City targets first offense cannabis with ticketing shift
Lawrence lawmakers switched first offense marijuana possession from district to city court in 2005 to speed cases and avoid federal student loan rules. Fines rose from typical district court levels to a minimum 200 dollars then 300, with costs and evaluations. Hoisington woman crochets nests for rescued birds
Ruth Stephens of Hoisington Kansas has crocheted 128 bird nests in recent months and ships them to the Bird Recovery Center in Santa Rosa California. The center uses one nest per bird and discards it after the bird leaves to prevent disease. Stephens received patterns and instructions from the center and often uses cotton yarn with donations coming from a friend and a second hand store.
