Highway projects risk stall if federal tax extension fails
TOPERA Kansas Secretary of Transportation Deb Miller warned lawmakers that without a Sept. 30 extension of the 18.4 cent gasoline and 24.4 cent diesel federal fuels tax, Kansas could halt some highway construction. About 30 percent of the $1.5 billion expected this year from federal highway funds funds construction. Miller noted mixed Congressional support and potential gains from Obama’s jobs plan adding up to $263 million for Kansas transportation.

Markets Turn Higher as Dow, Nasdaq End Mixed
Wednesday trading closed with the Dow up 140.88 to 11,246.73 while the Nasdaq rose 40.40 to 2,572.55 and the S&P 500 gained 15.81 to 1,188.68. The 30 year Treasury slipped 0.02 to 3.30 percent as grain futures moved and crude oil fell 1.30 to 88.91.

Driver fatigue cited in SLT crash near Lawrence
Investigators say 31-year-old Seth Outcalt of Lawrence may have been fatigued or asleep at the wheel on the South Lawrence Trafficway as his 1997 Honda Civic drifted into the oncoming lane and struck two vehicles. A blood sample is at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for testing. results could take weeks. Outcalt and his 9-month-old son Nolan were treated and released from area hospitals. The crash occurred at 1:35 p.m. Monday west of Lawrence on Highway 10.
