French high command reports German airfleet defeated in a battle over the western front. German retreat along the Moselle valley continues amid French pressure toward Trier, with Saarbrucken in reach and civilians moved from the frontier zone.
A caravan of 60 diplomats and families led by American ambassador Anthony J. D. Biddle arrived in Cernauti Romania to escape German advances flooding southeast Poland. The group reports Germany aims to sever Poland from Romania as fronts press forward and refugee conditions worsen.
Stark formally entered the Democratic senatorial primary avoiding the bossism issue. He backs Roosevelt and faces Truman and Milligan potential bids. Moscow and Tokyo reportedly reached an armistice on the Manchukuo border with talks toward a non aggression pact.

Henry F. McElroy 74 longtime power broker in Kansas City political machine died at his home after months of illness. He stepped down from city control April 13 1989 six days after Tom Pendergast’s indictment. Pendergast later jailed. Cause listed as arterial sclerosis and uremia. Survived by son Henry Jr. and daughter Mary.
Former Kansas City city manager McElroy faced federal and Jackson County indictments over an alleged $356,000 water survey scheme by a bogus firm. He led the city from 1925, navigated Pendergast machine politics, and resigned amid pressure as officials questioned emergency fund expenditures. He previously rose to national attention in 1933 after paying a ransom to free his daughter. Funeral services set for a former city leader with ties to Dunlap Iowa and Amboy Illinois.
London reports from the British ministry of information that a number of German submarines have been destroyed by patrols of British destroyers and airplanes. Survivors were rescued and captured where possible as the communique describes ongoing wide area patrols and attacks against U boats.

Distress calls from an unidentified ship said to be going down after being shelled by a submarine were intercepted at 3 41 p m EST today by a radio marine station in Chatham Massachusetts The station did not hear the call itself but relayed it from several other ships and presumed the vessels were somewhere along the south Atlantic coast No call letters or position were given.
