Today in History: Key Writes Star-Spangled Banner and Luna 2 Moonfall
On Sept 14 1814 Francis Scott Key was inspired to write The Star-Spangled Banner after watching the British bombard Fort McHenry in Maryland. The same date marks McKinley’s 1901 death in Buffalo from an assassin’s gunshot wounds with Roosevelt succeeding him. Luna 2 became the first manmade object to reach the Moon in 1959, crashing onto its surface. Grace Kelly died in 1982 at 52 after a car crash in Monaco.
