After more than a year of talks cattle producers meatpackers and supermarkets reached a voluntary labeling system for U.S. produced beef. Falcon Kidnapped From Toledo Zoo Aviary
A thief slashed a wire mesh at the Toledo Zoo and stole an 8 inch African Pygmy falcon worth 1000 dollars. Zookeeper Melissa Shaner said the bird was close to laying eggs and its mate, kept nearby, was left behind. The incident marks a rare crime for the zoo.

Suspects in bombing and bank robbery flee La Junta
In La Junta, two masked men bombed a local school to divert police, abducted Colorado East Bank and Trust president Gregg Mullins and his wife, then attempted a bank robbery when Mullins could not open the vault. Mullins was struck and the suspects fled, police said.

Summer 2000 warmer than normal across United States
Washington AP reports summer 2000 was warmer than normal in the United States though not among the top 10. The season averaged 73.2 F, 1.1 degrees above average, with cooler Northeast and Midwest and warmer South and West. August temps were much above normal in Kansas, the driest August since 1895 for the state. Across the year to date, January through August was the warmest on record, with 57.3 F nationally, 2.7 degrees above the 106 year average. All contiguous states except South Carolina, Maine, and Vermont ran warmer than normal amid drought and reduced rainfall.
