States seek contract protection for farmers under big firms
Sixteen states including Iowa and Colorado plan new protections for farmers who grow livestock or grain under contract with large firms. Rules would require plain language contracts, a three day review, no confidentiality, a first priority lien for payments, protection against retaliation for joining producer groups, and civil action rights. The list of states includes Iowa, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Governor Vilsack recently acted to curb secrecy in contracts. Iowa remains a leading hog producer.
