French forces press on the Aisne sector driving Germans back one to two miles as part of a new allied offensive. Units report gains in ground and momentum toward neighboring positions.
French troops surged dawn to edge of the Ailette front capturing Mont Dmessages Allemont and Sancy south of the river. About 1 800 German prisoners taken on this front with additional captives from St Mihiel, while Haig announces British forces hold Ouchy lez in Bassee.
Gertrude Black of Baldwin shot her step mother Mrs Leona Black in the head with a shotgun last night. The wounded woman is not believed to be in danger. Charles Black reported the incident to Sheriff Woodward who will detain Gertrude this afternoon. Gertrude, a respected teacher, has been unsettled since her mother’s death and feared her father would remarry. She surrendered to relatives in Lawrence and offered to turn herself in. The Black family is a long established local clan.
War Department directs officers on furlough serving as instructors to report at once to Captain F. B. Rice of the U S Training Detachment at K U. The notice reached Carteina Rice with difficulty communicating details, reflecting disrupted lines of contact while awaiting orders.
Secretary Baker arrives at St Mihiel after American forces freed several towns composed mostly of women. The advance highlights Allied progress and women’s roles in the liberated areas.
Officials in Washington debate the future American thrust and the booty from St Mihiel as reports from the front leave open whether pursuit of retreating Germans continues. Miss Elizabeth Spurge will open a dining room in Myers Hall around October 1 offering meals for a nominal price.
Principal F H Olney announced the high assembly at the First Presbyterian school will meet in the church auditorium Monday at 8 o clock. Enrollment this fall matches spring, with freshmen higher and upperclassmen leaving for work. Olney expects over five hundred students. Joseph Arnott died at his home ten miles southwest of Lawrence yesterday. funeral at Valley Chapel.
The American first army drives into Lorraine with about 20000 German prisoners, a gain near thirteen miles at the St. Mihiel salient. French and American flanks push back German lines while Foch targets the St Gobain Massif near Laon. Petain’s divisions push into German positions, and 1800 prisoners are reported in one sector as British forces repel renewed attacks.
Registrar Foster tells Lawrence Rotarians there is no need for parental fear about sending daughters to KU this winter. Soldiers are regular students under strict 24 hour discipline and must conduct themselves as gentlemen. Limited visiting hours and hostess house supervision ensure proper social contact.

Plans for the drive for 170,500,000 land for war work November 11 to 18 will be made at the meeting. Speaker will be W. M. Wiley, state campaign chairman, and H. M. Davis recently returned from war work in France.
In Arcadia Kansas a bank raid sparked a gun battle with armed villagers. One bandit was killed and another wounded and captured. a third escaped. Wounded prisoner Pronk is in custody. Pete Marrazzo’s draft from Kansas City linked to the incident. Citizens alerted by telegraph operators at the Frisco depot confronted the robbers as they fled, with the casualty body found near the bank.
Readable figures show enrollment in city school grades rising with 1 470 new students noted. Senior officials reported 1 170 in core grades and 262 beginners starting this year amid changing enrollment rules. An association meeting September 26 featured remarks on national thought and education.
