Lawrence retail sales surge with August high and rebound hints

Lawrence retail sales climbed through August with a 25 percent year over year rise and a total of 124.08 million in taxable sales the largest month so far. Tax collections through January to August 2012 show a 7.6 percent increase over 2011, signaling a retail rebound despite potential reporting anomalies.

Lawrence eyes curbside recycling and a Halloween store surge

The city projects a 2012 sales tax surplus of about 1.1 million and weighs curbside recycling bids aimed at 50 percent recycling by 2020 with an 18 month wait before start. Free Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services in Lawrence

The Chabad Center for Jewish Life will provide free Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at the Kansas Union for Lawrence residents without a place to celebrate or unable to afford a synagogue. Rosh Hashana begins after sundown Sunday and ends Sept 18. Yom Kippur begins after sundown Sept 25 and lasts 24 hours. Universities clash over campus tobacco bans nationwide

The Health and Human Services plan to prohibit smoking nationwide follows a large number of campuses banning tobacco. As of July 1, 774 colleges banned smoking with 562 banning all tobacco. Kansas University reported campus wide bans at its Kansas City and Wichita medical campuses since September 2006, prohibiting tobacco inside and outside buildings.

KU tobacco policy varies campus to campus

KU enforces no smoking within and near buildings on the Lawrence and Edwards campuses following state rules, while tobacco use is allowed in designated areas at Memorial Stadium and in student housing. Violations may bring fines from 100 to 500 dollars and possible disciplinary actions. the university does not plan a campuswide ban and offers cessation aid.
