West Berlin authorities warn Communist East Germany may try to disrupt Western air flights to Berlin after staged incidents at Tempelhof and Tegel airports. East Germany claims control of air corridors 110 miles behind the Iron Curtain, a claim US Britain and France challenge.
In Ciudad Trujillo Dominican Republic four protesters died and more than twenty were injured as tanks and troops restored order after a clash sparked by a four man OAS mission investigating sanctions on Trujillo era rulers. Eyewitnesses said police fired on demonstrators near Duarte Bridge. police claimed an air force sergeant fired in response to a stoning of his car. The OAS caravan fled the scene as crowds protested and shouted liberty and brutality.
The Journal-World reports four telephone trunks were nonstop from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m with about 12 calls a minute. The article notes more than 3 000 calls on the pool measure and a proposed 60 by 160 foot pool at Broken Arrow Park near Haskell Institute. This marks a second major defeat in recent years following a 1956 vote.
Lawrence LIFE and People-to-People officials praise a warm hosting effort for foreign students at KU this year. Dill Dawson reports 96 arrivals housed across private homes and campus residences, with more expected next week.
Former Lawrence Police Chief John Hazelet resigning to join government service is assigned to San Salvador in Central America. He will begin a 16 week training at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington under the State Department, including learning Spanish. He plans to move Dec 29. Originally slated for Korea, conditions there prompted the change.
Lawrence voters rejected the municipal swimming pool bond 3533 to 2299 amid more than 3000 calls to the Journal World. turnout reached 5877 with 12700 registered voters. a school official remarked we didn’t get the pool but we sure got the water.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a 4.1966 billion foreign aid bill in a three hour session. The panel restored 533 million of a 596 million House cut and sent the measure to the Senate for action Friday as one of the final steps before adjournment.
Kansas University Chancellor Clarke Wescoe will speak on The University and the Community Team at a 7 30 a m breakfast for Lawrence Chamber of Commerce members at the Hotel Eldridge. No reservations are necessary.
The Navy will call 1,957 reservists to active duty next month to bring 18 reserve air squadrons to full strength. Nearly 8,400 reservists have already been summoned in October. Volunteers receive at least 30 days notice and report at various times in October under a priority order for recalls.
John Robert Kerfoot age 12 son of Mrs Marguerite Kerfoot 1415 W 21st St Terr has been moved to St Marys Hospital Kansas City. He suffered a fractured skull and a broken finger in a car bicycle collision Saturday afternoon in the 2200 block on Louisiana Street.
United Nations declares Katanga no longer independent as Elisabethville battles end. President Tshombe flees. central government to appoint administrator and integrate Katanga forces. Casualties reported among defenders and U.N. troops, with clashes ending after hours of fighting.
In Kansas, a station wagon carrying Eldon Ackerman 28 Thelma Ackerman 36 and Linda Anspaugh 10 and Mark Anspaugh 8 was swept off Highway K31 by Rock Creek floodwaters. The bodies of Eldon Thelma and Linda were recovered, with a fourth occupant missing presumed dead.
In Loughton near London 11 year old Jane Reeve who breaks out in a rash around boys wins permission to attend a girls only school. Her father protested after being told the coed high school was full. An official said the move is justified for her extreme nervousness and health.
Lawrence High football coach Al Woolard addressed Sertoma Club members in Manhattan saying the Lions face a difficult season opener this Friday. He noted the team is sluggish early in September after graduating 21 players, many linemen, leaving the squad untested for the first game. Also present were LHS cheerleaders and twirler Lynn Blumendahl of Goodland.
Up to seven inches of rain drenched the Kansas City area forcing evacuations by boat and helicopter. Four people drowned south of the city as floodwaters swirled a station wagon. Bridges washed out and roads inland remained flooded as rivers rose.
A dryer in the automatic laundry at Hillcrest Shopping Center caught fire around 1 15 p m today. Fire Chief F C Sanders said a wooden structure atop the dryer started the blaze. No damage to machines or clothing occurred.
Plans for the 1961 Lawrence United Fund Campaign were made at a breakfast meeting led by UF President Robert Payne and drive chairmen at Hotel El Dridge. The goal is 58000 with last year slightly over subscribed, including agencies such as Salvation Army and Red Cross. The drive runs through November 6 with advanced gifts starting September 20 and payroll deduction urged.
