National Merit semifinalists named from Lawrence area
Nine local seniors across Free State High Lawrence High and Bishop Seabury Academy were named National Merit semifinalists based on PSAT scores. The group will compete for about 8300 scholarships as finalists are chosen using SAT scores essays and references. Juan Torres Gavosto of Free State also earned National Hispanic Scholar recognition.

Topeka man pleads guilty in university student robbery case
Garrett Paulson, 19, pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated robbery and criminal threat for the Aug. 29 incident at The Reserve apartment complex near KU where three students were approached by two armed men. The other suspect, Sterling Wilkins, 19, faces charges and a Oct. 3 preliminary hearing.

Fort Riley adds 16 names to Global War on Terrorism Monument
At Fort Riley Kansas a Tuesday ceremony marked the 11th anniversary of 9 11 by adding 16 soldiers to the Global War on Terrorism Monument near the Cavalry Parade Field. The names, joined with 188 others, honor service members who deployed from Fort Riley or mobilized through the post before heading to combat.
