The FDA authorized Arava from Hoechst Marion Roussel as a new option for about 2 million Americans with rheumatoid arthritis. It is not a cure but comparable to methotrexate and may slow joint erosion. Early treatment with either drug during the first one to three years can protect joints from irreversible damage.
A Russian sailor, 19, opened fire aboard a nuclear submarine in Severomorsk, killing eight crew members before barricading himself in the torpedo compartment.
