Carter Meets Catholic Leaders on Human Rights Policy

President Carter met with Archbishop Bernardin and Bishop Kelly in the Oval Office to discuss how his human rights crusade would affect foreign policy. Catholic leaders, supportive of Carter's stance and the Panama Canal treaty, urged a constitutional abortion ban and noted the HEW funding cut except to save a mother's life.

Lawrence to sign design contract for new city hall

Lawrence City Commission is set to sign a design contract Tuesday night for the city hall. The plan includes a basic design agreement site surveys for 2000 dollars and 8000 dollars to pursue a federal solar heating grant. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Lawrence National Bank building.

Kansas woman appeals civil rights ruling over restaurant hire

Ivy Benjamin, a Pakistani origin permanent resident, alleges she was denied employment at Sirloin Restaurant and Club in Wichita because she is a non citizen. Ken Kirby, Sirloin president, says he does not recall the call and asserts hiring preference for American citizens when available. The Kansas Commission on Civil Rights hears the case with two weeks for written conclusions before the examiner tallies the findings.

USDA to release new forecasts for corn and soybeans

The Agriculture Department will publish Sept 1 production estimates for corn soybeans and other crops. Corn seen around 6.1 billion bushels with drought pockets noted. soybean crop around 1.6 billion bushels. Wheat and cotton revisions also expected with updated figures for sorghum oats barley rice peanuts tobacco sugar beets and sugarcane.

Weather delays plane carrying A's to Kansas City duel

A charter plane with Oakland A's aboard was forced to land at Salina airport due to turbulent weather. About ten players rented cars to drive 175 miles to Kansas City, while the rest traveled by Frontier Airlines buses to join the Royals for a four game series opener. Airport officials cited lightning and thunder as the cause of the forced stop.
