Paris dispatches report French advance guards have driven a wedge into the Siegfried line east of Saarbrucken as British troops move into position. The French motorized units were described as advancing toward the German industrial city.
Berlin reports German forces have crossed the Warsaw Siedlce and Warsaw Bialystok railways east of Warsaw as they tighten the ring around the city. They claim defeats northeast of Warsaw and say vanguards reached the rail line and crossed the Bug river. Occupations include Poznan Torun Gniezno Inowroclaw.
More than 250 leaders from eastern Kansas and Kansas City Missouri are invited to a September 19 luncheon and private preview of the national cornhusking contest field at the F H Leonhard farm northeast of Lawrence. The event, sponsored by the contest executive committee, aims to acquaint attendees with plans for the contest and discuss the Resourceful Kansas exhibit and hybrid corn. The program begins with a 2 30 p m luncheon at the Eldridge hotel followed by field inspection and discussions with county agents newspaper and grain men state officials legislators and business leaders.

The British government plans to move between 7 000 and 8 000 department staff out of London while keeping the government center in the capital. No ministers or wartime officials will evacuate and no department will be entirely removed. Details on affected departments and new locations remain secret.
The British liner Arandora Star arrived from Cherbourg and Southampton with 441 aboard, 260 Americans, amid wartime warnings of subs off Nantucket. The ship carried $14 million in gold and altered visuals for concealment. A Maharajah from Tripura was aboard and traffic rules limit neutral trade under belligerent rights.

Forecaster S D Flora cautions a brief rain period may arrive late in the week followed by cooler weather, though relief is not immediate. He notes Calgary shows cooler air far northwest, but it moves slowly.
Polish general staff reported Warsaw’s defenders pushed German forces back toward the outskirts of the capital as heavy Polish reinforcements arrived. Updates from Lwow and Cernauti described fighting along the Bug and Vistula rivers with stalemate in several sectors.
The British ministry announced the Duke and Duchess of Windsor have landed in England and begun settling in an unknown London Area residence. The couple left Antibes after the war outbreak and speculation linked the former king to Fort Belvedere as a quiet home. No duties or appoint- ments were disclosed.
London reports Prime Minister Chamberlain will present his second wartime report to Parliament tomorrow afternoon. The disclosure was made last night as the war with Germany continues.
Secretary Wallace reviewed an official forecast of a 1939 corn crop around 2.52 billion bushels to gauge whether supplies including a large carryover justify marketing quotas. If quotas pass, farmers exceeding allotments could store surplus or pay a tax. War in Europe and loaned surplus might avert quotas.
Washington reports a German submarine commander warned all neutral ships to halt or be fired upon. Capt. Nicolson of Waterman Steamship described the Wa costa halted off Ireland for three hours before resuming to New York. Britain seized 600 barrels of resin on a Waterman vessel as contraband.
The world’s tallest man Robert Wadlow, 21, arrived in Lawrence to stay at the Eldridge hotel. A crowd gathered as he signed the register and moved through the lobby and coffee shop. He towered above doors and chairs, joked with his father and J E Hagan, and planned a quiet evening rest after a dinner.
Frank Willey, superintendent, said algae in city water remains not vanquished despite constant treatment. Three quarters of a ton of carbon daily is used to absorb oil released by algae and settle it. A count showed 3,000 Anabaena per cubic centimeter, with other algae present but not troublesome. Topeka officials noted some improvement as weather favors algal growth.
Generally fair conditions in Kansas with cooler temperatures Wednesday in the northwest. Tonight and Wednesday will be not very warm with a lighter turnout of gas office readings expected by 7 am today and noon readings noted.
