Army Officers Siege National Hotel in Havana Crisis
Defiant army officers barricaded inside the National Hotel in Havana refused President Grau San Martin’s ultimatum to yield within 24 to 26 hours. Estimated 500 to 800 officers, backed by ABC and OCRR secret societies, prepared for a showdown to reinstate De Cespedes’ administration as government forces ringed the hotel and cut services. Ambassadors and Americans, including Sumner Welles, remained at the hotel as cabinet posts were filled and political maneuvering continued.
