Germans are now busy in retirement on all sides of a twenty mile St Mihiel salient where engagement began this morning with a murderous bar rage that lasted nearly eight hours while Americans drive in the direction of Metz.
Allied and American troops advance on a twenty mile Lorraine front near the German border aiming to reduce the St Mihiel salient. French and American artillery and air forces batter German positions as Ludendorff faces a fresh challenge with possible reduced manpower.
Paris reports a supreme line of defense named the Parsifal is under construction by Germany from Antwerp to Metz. Marcel Hutin in Echo de Paris notes the Antwerp forts are being placed in a defensive condition.
French and American forces attacked German positions on both sides of the St Mihiel salient, beginning with a four hour barrage. The operation covered twelve miles on the south and eight miles on the west, with heavy artillery and many airplanes in action. Germans appeared to withdraw their artillery while contesting forward advances and some prisoners were taken as the first and second waves moved into German lines. British forces crossed the canal du Nord near Havrincourt and moved to the western banks, taking Vermand Attilly Vendes and advancing toward St Quentin amid stiff German opposition.
Washington dispatch reports French and American forces launching a wide front south and east of Verdun in a major battle seen as possibly decisive. American divisions including the First and Second Regular, the 89th National Army, the 82nd National Army, and the 37th National Guard are engaged around the St Mihiel salient, with fighting near Nancy as Pershing aims to drive the enemy from the salient. A concert by the F A U band at Central Park features leader J H Bell and Fraternal Aid emblem base drum painted by A Roche. Burt Jewett, registrant, marks his forty fifth birthday on the farm southwest of town.
A report notes prominent men on the Chamber of Commerce committee pushing to secure passage of an amendment. The effort centers on securing support among business leaders and local officials to advance the proposed change through the legislative process.
The Chamber of Commerce formed a committee led by T. F. Sweeney to coordinate publicity for the constitutional amendment known as the mill tax proposition. The group will assist the State Board and link efforts across education institutions as they prepare for wartime men and officers. The aim is to secure permanent financial support for the schools.
The new draft registration opened at seven. Thousands queued as men 18 to 21 began to appear, with 240 names in Second Ward by two. By midafternoon about one thousand registered across nine precincts, and officials expect most eligible men to comply by nine tonight. County sites number thirteen, with county totals unavailable until Saturday. Also: business note on the Chamber of Commerce unanimous decision about watermelons and a three week gap before next meetings.
Enrollment at the university for the medical reserve corps is halted to September. No students will be attached to the KU unit and Marine Corps members will not join the S A T C. Capts Scher and Dinsmoor outline merit based officer training and limited enrollment across 400 colleges nationwide. Barracks for 2,400 men are planned, with overflow possibly sent to other schools.
The Budget, recognized as the second best high school paper in the state, reveals a new editor in chief Frank Rising and a full slate of associate editors. Chamber of Commerce president appoints a committee to estimate how many fraternity houses and rooming homes could serve as barracks for 2400 soldiers, including 2000 for the 5 A T and 400 for KU training detachment. Will seek information for military authorities. Also reports a collision injuring Walter Hayden and draft calls for seven colored men to Camp Funston with two volunteers for Ft Hayes. Nancy Goff returns from Topeka as guest of Miss Georgia Niese.
Lawrence citizens face a space shortage as Myers Hall may be repurposed for regular use. A committee proposes to relocate the Soldiers Welfare Club’s hostess house to enable expanded aid and study for soldiers and students at the university.
Work begins on the first of twelve university barracks for students this winter with 200 men per building. Foundations for others laid, crews aim for completion by October 1. Superintendent Shay leads the project with Engineer C. C. Williams assisting. Burial notices accompany community items. The Rotary club hears Capt. Rice say he may settle in Lawrence after the war.
