Transcribed dispatches report the first medical transport and field hospitals leaving Bombay on September 16 with the full force aboard by September 25. General Hunter travels from Simla to South Africa as British forces prepare for the Transvaal expedition amid ammunition consignments landed at Lourenco and Marquette Delago Bay.
E L Martin reports that at a Pittburg and Gulf bondholders meeting in Amsterdam five million bonds were pledged for the Philadelphia committee plan. Stilwell and Martin may regain control after receivership with Marin possibly president and Stilwell chairman of the board.
The City of Pueblo reported tension aboard en route from San Francisco to Honolulu as white and colored soldiers clashed over crops. A provost guard separated the groups to prevent violence and some cadets were landed at Honolulu for punishment.
In Haltimars on September 12 Captain N Mayo, hero of Mantle and commander of the cruiser Ballimord, was honored in a public celebration. Residences and businesses flew bunting and crowds filled streets as ships in harbor decked their yards for the tribute amid a royal reception and parade.
Secretary Root has received Gen Otis's campaign outline for the Philippines to begin after the dry season. The plan calls for a 64 649 man army split into two divisions under Generals MacArthur and Lawton. One division would operate north of Manila the other to the west and south with six brigades each while remaining troops garrison Manila and key towns. Cavalry to be placed under Lawton for rapid movements.
Washington September 1 The central feature of the Dewey celebration will be the presentation of the sword awarded by Congress to Admiral Dewey. Mondow D Lane secretary of the navy is invited to present the sword which costs 10000 dollars and is largely made of 22 carat gold aside from blade and scabbard. President McKinley will sit beside the hero of Manila on the stand with cabinet officers nearby.
London exhibitors halt Paris exposition plans amid protests over the Dreyfus verdict. Clergy and Jewish groups in San Francisco send messages of sympathy to Mme Dreyfus as tensions rise across Europe. Paris officials report mixed reactions as Dreyfus matters continue to echo internationally.
In New York on September 13 Edison describes an electrical process to extract gold from desert sands in the Southwest. He claims vast deposits near Santa Fe New Mexico worth millions will become obtainable and adds the world’s gold supply will rise. The note highlights congressional attention and other political and regional news of the period.
In Tuckahoe on Sept 13 Terry McGovern American defeated Pedlar Palmer of England in the world bantamweight title fight. McGovern won the flat round after Palmer led early with a brief advantage and the American rallied, dropping Palmer with a right and left combination as the bell rang and again in the final moments. The crowd and betting favored McGovern, with substantial wagers placed on the American.
New York Sept 12 Cornelius Vanderbilt eldest son of the late Wm H Vanderbilt head of the New York Central railway died at his home on Fifty seventh street at 5 15 this morning from heart failure following an attack of diarrhea His wife Gladys and youngest son Reginald were present and he had returned from Newport only last night He appeared in health until the sudden attack and died at dawn He leaves five children Cornelius Gertrude Alfred Reginald and Gladys and had recently travelled in Europe hoping to improve his health
Three men linked to the anti-Semitic league head Guerin were arrested after a struggle with police. They had operated rooms opposite the league headquarters and passed food to Guerin by rope, a scheme uncovered after the August 19 raid.
