Memorial services for Sarah Jane Jones Carttar 61 of Lawrence Kansas will be held at 4 p m Saturday September 15 2012 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence Private interment later at the Big Island of Hawaii She died September 8 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital She was born April 12 1951 in Hiawatha Kansas a 1969 Hiawatha High School salutatorian and longtime educator with 36 years in area schools She earned degrees from the University of Kansas and taught in Tonganoxie and Lawrence She was married to Stephen Carttar and survives three daughters two parents three brothers and three grandchildren Memorials may go to LMH Endowment FAO Oncology or Tonganoxie USD 464 Educational Foundation c o Warren McElwain Mortuary Online condolences welcomed at WarrenMcElwain com

Kahlyn Elizabeth Heine 22 of Topeka dies Saturday September 8 2012. A Celebration of Life is set for 10 am Thursday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Leiste officiating. Burial follows at Clinton Cemetery. She was born November 24 1989 in Lawrence daughter of Rodney C and Lannea L Blick Heine. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 2008 and Magna Cum Laude from Washburn University in 2012 with elementary education degree. She taught special education at Shawnee Heights Elementary and previously provided in home instruction. She was active in KNEA Redeemer Lutheran Church 4 H and Washburns Future Alumni Association. Survivors include her parents a sister Kirstyn and many relatives. Friends may call noon to 8 pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home with a 6-8 pm family reception. Memorials may be made to Kahlyn Heine Memorial Scholarship Fund or the church in care of the funeral home.

Salina votes to put repeal of anti-discrimination ordinance on ballot
Salina voters will decide in November whether to repeal the citys new ordinance barring discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The City Commission rejected a motion to roll back protections that took effect in June and unanimously placed the repeal proposal on the November 6 ballot. The ordinance, approved in May 3-2, bars discrimination in housing employment and public accommodations for gay lesbian bisexual and transgender people. Efforts to roll back the ordinance were led by the Kansas Family Policy Council and Awaken Salina, who collected hundreds of petition signatures.
