WWII POW Harry Kelley recalls brutal jungle years
Basehor resident Harry Kelley marks his 90th birthday shortly after the 65th anniversary of his release from captivity. A Navy veteran, he spent 18 months in the Burmese jungle on the Death Railway, weighing 93 pounds at one point, after surviving the sinking of the USS Houston. He credits his wife Audrey for support as they recall his wartime experiences, return to the United States, and years farming in Minnesota and Kansas. The couple now lives in Basehor where Kelley later drove a school bus and received honors from state and local officials. A birthday gathering is planned at the Basehor VFW post with family and neighbors.
