Computers in Crater Lake map lake bottom by sonar
Scientist Jim Gardner and eight colleagues camped on Wizard Island to create the most accurate 3‑D maps of Crater Lake’s bottom using high resolution multibeam sonar and GPS. The team stored data daily, found Crater Lake at 1,958 feet deep, and used a Cajun chef and shipboard comforts to focus on discovery.
