Hodges Sees Profits and Income Still Good
Secretary of Commerce Luther Hodges announced that corporate profits rose in the second quarter to a peak rate of 50.9 billion dollars while personal income climbed to a record annual rate of 443 billion. He cautioned the gains were not yet strong enough and predicted modest business strength through Christmas despite encouraging July and August indicators. Retail sales fell in August by 100 million to 19.6 billion, following a July 3 percent rise.
