Smokers face rising lung cancer death rates study shows
A large American Journal of Public Health study finds lung cancer deaths rose dramatically among smokers over three decades, especially women. Among 200k smokers from the 1960s and 1980s and 480k nonsmokers, death rates show cancers remain largely confined to smokers and nearly half of smoker deaths are from cigarettes. The study notes deeper inhalation and earlier starting ages, with women nearing men in deaths, yet offers cautious hope on coronary heart disease trends.

Teens Exiled By Alaska Tribe Face Return to Court
In Juneau Alaska a tribal court once banished Adrian Guthrie and Simon Roberts to remote islands as an alternative to prison for a 1994 assault. Now after a year away the 18 year olds may be sent to Washington state custody as the court weighs whether to end exile. Families aided their return to town and critics call the program a failure.

Shuttle astronauts link space and sea from Endeavour
Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter spoke with Michael Gerhardt aboard the underwater Florida Keys lab as they exchanged greetings from space and sea. Gerhardt, deep into an 11 day science mission aboard the shuttle Endeavour, described the ocean’s beauty and the need to protect it.
